Curious way to made a home page Interesting

Symbaloo is a Search Start Page

Symbaloo is a front page of sorts, offering much in the way of search and centralized access to other links you frequent on the Internet.

With this service, you get tiny modules that have been bunched together by default for many of your every day purposes: travel and shopping search, music and torrents, podcasts and RSS feeds. These can be rearranged, added to and deleted, according to your preferences. Symbaloo has left a few boxes empty for you to insert your own modules based on its existing options (such as a weather widget) or a custom URL. A search box in the center of the screen lets you perform a regular keyword search, or a specific search based on a module you’ve chosen; for instance, clicking on the dictionary module gives you the option to do a dictionary.com search, and a drop down menu allows you to choose Merriam Webster or Wiktionary instead. Your actual search results will appear in a new browser window.

While the main function of Symbaloo is currently for search purposes, it could easily evolve into something that resembles Pageflakes or Netvibes, which has more widget and ajax functionality. I’m also concerned that Symbaloo doesn’t let you create accounts in any way. While your changes will be saved on your computer, utilizing a public computer or needing to access your Symbaloo setting from another location won’t be possible.

Pownce is moving fast

Put Pownce on Facebook

Pownce logo

We just go notified (via Pownce) that you can now put Pownce on Facebook, thanks to the efforts of Jake Jarvis. The Pownce application for Facebook displays updates from you and your friends in little speech bubbles (or rectangles, technically). These Facebook apps are literally getting developed in a matter of hours.

Apologies to Leah et al if our Pownce invites drive caused the reported performance issues - you seem to have coped amicably and I’m seeing nothing but positive reviews.

Jaiku on iPhone

Jaiku on Your iPhone

Jaiku has created a mobile version of its micro-blogging service for the iPhone, and has launched it just now.

The iPhone version of Jaiku looks and functions in a very similar manner to the web version, and lets you post and receive updates for your network. Jaiku already had a strong mobile integration, working closely with Nokia for an improved feature set and the inclusion of its service with the Widsets mobile widget catalog. Jaiku is clearly looking to take the lead over Twitter in the micro-blogging arena by offering its services in all relevant ecosystems for leveraging purposes (the iPhone being the most recently anticipated platform for which an ecosystem will emerge), as it was quick to launch its Facebook application as well. While Jaiku remains focused on its web-based and mobile blogging tools being available in as many places as possible, Twitter continues to support its own growing ecosystem.

MobIncentive: Social Fundraising for Getting Things Done

MobIncentive: Social Fundraising for Getting Things Done

Just launched MobIncentive automates the timeless tradition of motivating people to action by offering cold hard cash. The service allows users to post challenges and invite people to pledge funds towards the cause. For example, the site currently features a challenge someone has setup to try and motivate their brother in law to quit smoking, and friends have pledged $65 if he can stop smoking for six months.

Once a challenge is completed, MobIncentive sends out PayPal invoices to the pledges and keeps track of who still owes money. The site also includes basic social networking features including user profiles, friend’s lists, and tagging of challenges.

So far the service seems to have attracted rather trivial challenges, such as “I Want The Big Mac to Cost $1 in Seattle” and “I Want to See Who Can Drink a Can of Beer the Fastest.” However, the company sees itself being used in a wide variety of ways, from the personal (like the help a friend stop smoking example) to global causes like saving the rain forest.

MobIncentive is founded by Andrew Lin and Brian Sabino, two former Microsoft employees.
