Google Calendar Mobile

A neat launch on Thursday that almost got buried under the Facebook Platform news: Google rolled out a mobile version of Google Calendar, making it super easy to view and edit events on the go. Just go to calendar.google.com from your phone - no need for syncing.

Looks like Google’s web office just took another baby step forward.

GeoCommons - Google Maps Meet Heat Maps

GeoCommons logo

GeoCommons is the latest mapping service which enables users to create geographic data and use it to create custom, intelligent maps. Think of it as the mix between Swivel and Google Maps.

It works like this: you can take a geographic data set and choose which parts you want to use. For example, say you want to use the calorie consumption in various US states dataset to create a map. You can take data from 2002 and 2003, and focus it so that only states above a certain number of calorie consumption are visible. Then, you export that to Google Earth’s KML or CSV format, and you get a nice, custom map. Or you can go to your GeoCommons workplace, search for data from there, and directly add it to your map (you can use several layers of data), which you can save and share with other users.

The maps themselves are based on Google maps, but the data is presented in the form of shapes and heat maps, which is visually very effective, but unfortunately, in practice it’s sometimes a bit slow.

GeoCommons is quite an advanced service, and although it can be used for fun, businesses, professionals, and geoenthusiasts will make more use of it than casual users. It takes a while to get used to all that it can offer, but once you do, the results can be very rewarding.

Meebo Plugin Now Available for Facebook

A new Meebo application has been created by James Jarvis to work on your Facebook profile.

The Meebo plug-in lets you chat with other Facebook users right from your profile page. It functions in the same manner as any other Meebo plugin and allows others to chat without needing to sign into Meebo. The application is available in the new Facebook Applications section, and is easy enough to add, even if you don’t yet have a Meebo account. The Meebo chat is somewhat customizable; you can choose the skin colors, text, background and header colors, as well as your username and the title of your chat module. Once the embed code is added to your profile, your Meebo chat module shows on the left side of your profile, beneath your status, notes, groups and such.

You can get a more inclusive list of new Facebook applications here, which were announced on Thursday evening at Facebook’s f8 Event.

MoboPic Crops Images for Your Mobile

MoboPic is a newly launched service that lets you take an image and crop it to a size that is specifically configured for your mobile phone, or social networking profile or gallery at MySpace, Hi5, Piczo, and the rest.

With MoboPic, you can upload an image from your computer, or insert the URL of the image you’d like to use. From there, you can crop, resize, zoom and save your image. MoboPic has pre-set several mobile phone specifications so that you can save it properly for your particular mobile device. The photos can be saved on your cell phone, and used as wallpaper, or saved in your social networking gallery, as most web-based networks have size limitations for images uploaded to their services. You’ll need to choose your phone type first, though, as your settings will be reset every time you choose your phone specs. Images are saved in MoboPic for one day, and a public URL is also provided for your resized image.

Surprisingly, you can’t search for photos on MoboPic (not even Flickr!). So if you do want an image from online, you’ll have to track down the URL yourself. Sadly, you can’t send images directly to your mobile phone or to your social networking profiles, either. Also, I can’t think of a better place to include a photo editing feature set, than with a service that is designed for creating images to be used on mobile devices and social networks.

Hopefully this will be a tool MoboPic adds in the future. MoboPic will have to partner with some other services, or better yet, create an API to be included in web services, to be of the most value to users. Other image editing tools include Photobucket, PikiPimp, and Graphita.

YouTube Launches Sketchies Comedy Contest

YouTube is having a sketch comedy contest, rightly called “Sketchies.” With the help of YouTube success story The Lonely Island, YouTube has begun to run the promo on its website. YouTube Sketchies is being sponsored by Sierra Mist.

The contest starts May 24th, and requires entrants to submit three sketch comedy shorts. The YouTube community will vote on a winner, and the prize pack includes a trip to a screening of The Lonely Island’s new movie, the opportunity to meet some influential people in the film and television industries, and some new gear, among other things. This contest is in conjunction with the release of a new comedy being made by The Lonely Island, “Hot Rod” which seems to be about a stunt man and his motorcycle.

This is, of course, another way to bridge the gap between online video and Hollywood, leveraging the crossover success of The Lonely Island crew. Other ways in which old and new media are continuing to merge include “Little Loca” actress Stevie Ryan landing a co-host gig on CW’s network for a show that will highlight viral Internet videos.
