YouTube Launches Sketchies Comedy Contest

YouTube is having a sketch comedy contest, rightly called “Sketchies.” With the help of YouTube success story The Lonely Island, YouTube has begun to run the promo on its website. YouTube Sketchies is being sponsored by Sierra Mist.

The contest starts May 24th, and requires entrants to submit three sketch comedy shorts. The YouTube community will vote on a winner, and the prize pack includes a trip to a screening of The Lonely Island’s new movie, the opportunity to meet some influential people in the film and television industries, and some new gear, among other things. This contest is in conjunction with the release of a new comedy being made by The Lonely Island, “Hot Rod” which seems to be about a stunt man and his motorcycle.

This is, of course, another way to bridge the gap between online video and Hollywood, leveraging the crossover success of The Lonely Island crew. Other ways in which old and new media are continuing to merge include “Little Loca” actress Stevie Ryan landing a co-host gig on CW’s network for a show that will highlight viral Internet videos.
